Hello to you all .
My neighbor and I checked out the road and conditions of the mines on Gladstone Mountain last week . We found the first five miles of the road to be freshly graded and in excellent condition, but the rest of the road to the mines is in bad shape , and though it may be possible for a good driver to get there in a two wheel drive vehicle it is definitely the place where four wheel drive is called for . The road splits at the five mile point and about 1 mile to the south west is the Lead King mine , where we will find Galena , and Crystals of Dolomite .About three miles on the upper branch of the road is the Electric Point mine and other mines where Galena , Aragonite , and other minerals may be found .
We have many small trees to get over and around , small washes to straddle and rocky points to get over and we will average about five miles an hour or less for the last three miles . If you are careful driver you can probably make it with hardly a scratch.
There was a forest fire along part of the road in and it was very heavily logged , but that does not extend as far as the mines .
As noted in our Schedule we will meet at Safeway Parking lot Aug.22 at 9 AM .

A note from Rex:
This is a reminder of the trip to the Edna and Keystone Mines – I have not checked out the road this year but last year it was in good condition and I will have loppers and a saw along just in case .
We will meet at Safeway parking in Chewelah at 9 AM Sunday June 27th.
More on the 2010 field trip page.

(Here is an email from Rex Barrans, <email@example.com>, about the Crystal Prospect Dig scheduled for June 13th. If you intend to go, email him first so they will expect you. Also remember that this trip needs a permit available from Levi’s mini-mart in Deer Park-(license number, signature, $10 per car))
I was up to the dig location to check on the road Tuesday ; the road is good but the dig area has been logged and Is a waste land . We will have to explore and start new digs as the old ones have been filled with dirt and brush . That may be an advantage as the old digs were not very productive any more, and now with almost all the trees gone it may make finding a good spot easier .
The Allen road is up the springdale/Hunters road but that is a terribly bad road and there is a better one that we will take. If it is more convenient for you we can meet you in Valley or Springdale rather than Chewelah ,but be sure to let me know where so we don’t miss you .
I am going to forward this to my list of rockhounds so they will know what to expect

Hello rock hounds ;
This is to remind you of our field trip to Saddle Mt. On Sunday May 2 .
We will meet at the Safeway Parking lot in Chewelah at 7AM , Do not be late as we will stop at the STAPLES parking lot on N. DIVISION and FOOTHILLS DRIVE at 8 AM to join up with those who will find it more convenient to meet us there .
Please share rides and fuel costs and if you can not maintain freeway speeds please ride with some one who can .
The road up the mountain is reported to be in good condition but all cars should have reasonable clearance . For those of you not familiar with this area ; a short handle shovel ,your rock hammer , small pick , mid size hammer , chisel ,5 gal. Bucket , lots of drinking water , and lunch .
This will be a long day and a tiring drive and we want it to be as comfortable as possible so
Please do not bring long handled shovels or large bars unless you will be driving a pickup , vans and cars will be loaded .
My van is already fully loaded, andGreg will be driving it as I am restricted due to health issues .
I just was made aware that loose tools and rocks in a passenger compartment is a NO –NO
All materials should be secured in a trunk or if in a passenger compartment should be secure in a cargo net , or better yet carried in a pickup .
Jerry Novack has offered to take his pickup and carry tools and rock –if we help with fuel cost ?
( my offer ) !
See you there —- Rex

Due to scheduling conflicts, the club trip to the Stonerose Fossil site has been moved from Saturday April 10th to Sunday April 11th. We still meet at Harvest Foods in Kettle Falls, 8:30 in the morning. Bring hard rock tools, we will need to fracture layers of rock and separate them with chisels in order to find fossils. There is a limit of 3 good fossil specimens per person and the club will collect enough money to cover the $30 group cost. We should be at Stonerose about 9:30 and expect to leave about 2 PM. So bring water and a lunch. Be prepared for highly variable weather.
